First Steps to Become a Makeup Artist
First Steps to Become a Makeup Artist
Article by Kay Gallagher
Like the majority of careers, there are many strategies to initially enter the make up artistry industry and several different ways to be a makeup artist. You need to first have a love of cosmetic products. Most make up artists start as enthusiasts, helping their family and friends to uncover great looks and just loving the techniques and products. This is a great place to start out! Some artists can easily find clients through recommendations from people they know and will spend their careers by doing this, never receiving any formal education in makeup artistry.
Other make up artists go a different route: they attend cosmetology school or a makeup design academy. Cosmetologists understand hair and makeup and they are eligible for licensure after completing their program. The extra skills accessible to the licensed cosmetologist may be beneficial and will broaden your client base, especially if you also have an interest in hairdressing. If hair is not your interest, cosmetology school most likely is not for you.
Make up artists could also attend esthetician training to understand skin treatment. This could also broaden your base of clients, allowing you to not just apply makeup, but also to improve the quality of your client’s skin. Estheticians will always be in high demand and can provide the makeup artist yet another paying skill in times between makeup artist jobs. Estheticians are also licensed professionals, having the ability to obtain an esthetics license available after graduation from a certified training course.
Still other fledgling makeup artists begin in retail. Many malls have makeup counters that hire new makeup artists to sell their products. Training is provided at work, and will give someone working to get into the makeup artistry industry excellent experience while giving them a paycheck. Such a job may enable you to assess if becoming a makeup artist is really the right career path for you.
